Olive View-UCLA Medical Center (OVMC) has been named one of the nation's best hospitals for maternity care by U.S. News & World Report. Part of LA County's public health system, OVMC is recognized for providing exceptional maternal and child healthcare and addressing gaps caused by maternity ward closures, as per the County of Los Angeles.
OVMC's commitment is paramount at a time when California has seen more than 200 maternal fatalities from 2019 to 2021 and 17 maternity wards in Los Angeles County have to abruptly close their doors. These closures have had a disproportionate impact on low-income and minority populations. "Our doors are always open," Dr. Christine Holschneider, Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center, stated in a press release.
Apart from its open-door policy, OVMC's nationally recognized status is a reflection of LA Health Services' innovative strategies for improving maternal health outcomes. This includes integrating advanced language services, maintaining low C-section and episiotomy rates, and tracking race- and ethnicity-specific data to tackle disparities in maternal care.
OVMC has also wisely invested in its MAMA's Neighborhood program, which offers a variety of services beyond just prenatal care. From comprehensive education on pregnancy and childbirth to housing and food resources, the program is a holistic approach to maternal and newborn health. Edgar Solis, CEO of Olive View-UCLA Medical Center, told LA County, "This recognition is a testament to our team’s unwavering dedication to not only meet but exceed our patients’ expectations, ensuring that high-quality healthcare is evident in every aspect of the care we provide."
The accolade signifies a broader commitment to accessible healthcare for all families—a principle echoed by Dr. Christina Ghaly, Director of LA County Department of Health Services. "We firmly believe that every family deserves care that is both exceptional and inclusive," she emphasized, in a statement made by the LA County.
