A severe blaze in Bay City has left one person hospitalized after two homes were consumed by fire last Saturday, officials reported. The MLive stated that the inferno originated in the 500 block of North Madison Avenue where the Bay City Department of Public Safety arrived on the scene at 11:23 a.m. to find a two-and-a-half-story residence at 521 N. Madison Ave. fully engulfed with flames, which also spread to the neighboring house at 517 N. Madison Ave., escalated by strong winds.
The individual injured in the incident was working on one of the houses when it caught fire and was in critical condition when transferred to Hurley Medical Center, according to WNEM, the battalion chief of Bay City Fire Operations Division, Rick Wells, reported that "a man who was working on the house was severely injured," he is currently fighting for his life. Firefighters from several departments, including Monitor Twp. and Portsmouth joined forces to combat the blaze as it grew to involve the neighboring structure.
No Bay City firefighters sustained injuries during the ordeal, assistance arrived from multiple jurisdictions to help extinguish the flames – the exact condition of the burn victim was not disclosed at the time, and North Madison Avenue was closed until late evening as indicated by the Michigan Department of Transportation, and the location remained inaccessible while the fire's origins and progression were being examined, a statement from the Bay City Department of Public Safety's social media post confirms.
The cause of the grisly event remains a mystery as the Fire Marshal's office continues its investigation, the Bay City Department of Public Safety's social media post highlighted the challenging conditions under which crews worked, with heavy winds causing direct flame impingement on the secondary structure, necessitating a defensive strategy to manage the fire and protect nearby properties. The department reiterates its dedication to providing the best possible public safety services to the citizens and visitors of Bay City, emphasizing the round-the-clock commitment of its staff in the face of such emergencies.
