In a significant development for the tech sector in Osceola County, the Board of County Commissioners has given the green light to a partnership with South Korean tech company ELSPES. The approved Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will see ELSPES committing at least $470 million to establish a manufacturing facility and global headquarters at NeoCity, a technology district developed by the county. With the potential for hundreds of jobs, the move is seen as a strategic boost to the regional economy and technological prowess.
The Osceola County news release details the specifics of the agreement with ELSPES, which includes creating at least 600 new jobs boasting an average annual salary of $85,000. These positions, which are to be filled by the end of 2028, reinforce the County's ambition to expand employment and carve out a niche as a hub for advanced technology manufacturing. This vision aligns with the initiatives the NSF Regional Innovation Engines Program made possible.
NeoCity has been gaining momentum recently, with notable developments such as the Central Florida Semiconductor Innovation Engine, sparked by a National Science Foundation award. Funding for the tech district has also poured in from the Department of Defense, the U.S. Economic Development Administration, and the Florida Department of Commerce. Plug and Play's launch of a semiconductor accelerator program showcases NeoCity's evolving status as a significant player in the high-tech ecosystem.
The establishment of ELSPES in NeoCity is expected to make the County an international name in advanced technology. This sentiment was echoed by ELSPES founder and CEO Young Y. Park, who, after visiting NeoCity, spoke highly of Osceola County's forward-thinking attitude and commitment to community values. "My visit to NeoCity brought a clear understanding of Osceola County's aspirations and forward-thinking initiatives to build a better future and a definitive commitment to values that inspire and uplift the community," Park stated, per Osceola County. He also expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration ahead: "We look forward to working together with Osceola County to fulfill these dreams – making meaningful contributions to the establishment of the ecosystem that is rising due to the NSF Engines award."
Osceola County's journey toward economic diversification and innovation began following the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic when unemployment reached an unprecedented 30 percent. Creating the NeoCity technology district represents a strategic investment in the County's economic future. Support and partnership from various entities such as SkyWater Technology, imec USA, and several universities and local organizations have been instrumental in building NeoCity's ecosystem. Officials highlight that one of NeoCity's goals is to add resilience to U.S. semiconductor production, contributing to regional prosperity and national interests.
