On Christmas Eve, Philadelphia firefighters were summoned to a substantial warehouse fire in the Frankford neighborhood, as flames ripped through the industrial site, according to the Philadelphia Fire Department's social media post. Efforts to quell the fire at the 1600 block of Foulkrod Street extended well into Christmas morning, with no reported injuries. The Philadelphia Fire Department stated the blaze was a three-alarm fire, requiring the presence of roughly 120 of its members.
As firefighters battled to fully extinguish the blaze, the Philadelphia Department of Public Health advised residents nearby to stay indoors due to potential air quality issues, as reported by NBC Philadelphia. The Health Department, acting out of an abundance of caution, took measures to assess the air quality following the incident, even though no specific hazardous substances were to immediately have been identified.
Officials diligently monitored the fallout from the incident and collected samples to ensure public safety, all while the Philadelphia Fire Department continued to diligently manage remaining hot spots. Residents were alerted on Christmas morning of the health department's warning to avoid exposure to the potentially contaminated air.
FOX 29 outlined steps for residents to take in order to minimize the risk to their health including avoiding outdoor activities, sealing homes by shutting windows and doors, and using recirculated air to prevent outdoor pollutants from infiltrating living spaces. These measures were emphasized especially for those living in the vicinity of the affected area to avoid breathing in any smoke or pollutants that might've been lurking in the atmosphere.
The Philadelphia Fire Department expressed gratitude to multiple partners, including police, emergency management, and utility companies, for their assistance during the ordeal. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Fire Marshal's Office.
