A shooting incident interrupted the quiet of Sumner on Sunday when gunshots were fired on Academy Street near Kincaid Avenue. A 22-year-old male sustained a non-fatal gunshot wound. Sumner Police Department reports indicate that the victim, who had been visiting the area to meet a female friend, was shot at around 11:30 pm after an interaction with a group of males that turned violent.
Following the sound of gunfire, Sumner Police officers swiftly moved to locate the injured man, who was found with a gun wound to his hip and buttock area. According to the victim, he recognized at least one individual from the group who confronted them and opened fire. East Pierce Fire & Rescue officials promptly provided aid, transporting the victim to Tacoma General Hospital where he received treatment for his injuries, described as non-life-threatening.
In a statement released by the City of Sumner, the Sumner Police declared the shooting "an isolated incident" and reassured the community that there is "no indication of a threat to the public." The police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the altercation and shooting.
