A Potomac man has been charged after being involved in a hit-and-run collision that seriously injured a Montgomery County Department of Transportation employee, reported the Montgomery County Department of Police. Ricky Rohan Kapoor, age 30, was arrested at Dulles International Airport last Saturday following his return from Bogota, Columbia, after a warrant had been issued for his arrest due to the incident that occurred on October 24.

According to the details released by the Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) of the Montgomery County Police, Kapoor was behind the wheel of a silver 2006 Infiniti Sedan when he struck the worker at the intersection of Briggs Chaney Rd. and Legend Oaks Dr., Kapoor then left the scene without offering help or contacting emergency services. Instead, he boarded a plane to Columbia soon after the incident occurred, Kapoor is facing a felony charge for failing to remain at the scene of an accident that involved bodily injury, a charge that could lead to a prison sentence of up to five years and fines amounting up to $5,000.

Montgomery County Police Chief Marc Yamada expressed concerns over road safety and the importance of driver responsibility, "It is everyone's responsibility when they get behind the wheel of a car to make sure they are doing everything they can to keep all road users safe, especially our vulnerable road users," Yamada said via Montgomery County Department of Police website. "These types of tragedies are absolutely preventable." The county also reminded drivers how to navigate safely around work zones, emphasizing slowing down, being alert, maintaining a safe distance, and expecting the unexpected to help prevent such incidents.
