A Racine County Sheriff's sergeant is being hailed for his timely intervention that likely saved the life of an injured dog found on a roadway in Union Grove earlier this week. As documented by body camera footage, the sergeant discovered the two-year-old Corgi, named Tato, lying on the road Wednesday, after the pup was struck in a hit-and-run incident, as reported by FOX6 News.

The sergeant was driving near Washington and Raynor on the evening of the accident when he witnessed what he initially thought might be a deceased animal. Swiftly turning around, he activated his emergency lights to safely approach and ascertain the dog's condition. The sheriff's office recounted to WISN 12 News that the sergeant found Tato to still be alive albeit severely injured and was compelled to immediately get him to an emergency clinic, softly encouraging the dog with the words, "Hang on, little buddy."

According to a detailed report by WISN 12 News, Tim Gross, Tato's owner, expressed that the dog incurred many serious injuries including a broken pelvis. Gross reflected on the heart-rending sight of his previously vibrant pet become incapacitated. "Watching him just kind of languish like this is killing me," Gross told WISN 12 News. The accident apparently happened after Tato managed to slip through a fence, subsequently being hit near the Highway 45 and Highway 20 roundabout.

Gross and his family are now looking at nearly $10,000 in veterinary expenses as they come to grips with the reality of Tato's condition. A CBS 58 report confirmed Tato's injuries were not life-threatening but he faces a considerable period of recovery. A GoFundMe has since been initiated for the dog's treatment, with Gross resolutely stating, "I'll do anything to get him back where he needs to be," as per WISN 12 News. The family has been reunited with Tato following the dog’s timely rescue and subsequent care.

Meanwhile, the Racine County Sheriff's Office has reportedly yet to locate or arrest the driver responsible for the hit-and-run. The community's response to the incident has been one of solidarity and support for Gross, who is known in Cedarburg as a cherished UPS driver. A community member highlighted to WISN 12 News, "Tim delivers joy to all of us, and this is our chance to give back in his time of need."
