A Raleigh family experienced a tragic loss on Christmas Eve when their pet dog was fatally shot by a police officer. The officer, who was on the scene to investigate a stolen vehicle report in the southeast neighborhood of Raleigh, encountered the dog in the 3900 block of Alder Grove Lane. As reported by ABC11, the police spokesperson stated that the dog charged aggressively at the officer. In an attempt to retreat, the officer ultimately discharged his service weapon, leading to the dog's death.
"This is not the result we wanted, especially during the holiday season," the Raleigh Police Department spokesperson said, as per the statement obtained by WRAL. Working with the family, which the dog belonged to, was confirmed by the Raleigh Police Department. While charging at the police, the dog, a 15-year-old Husky named Maxi, was described by its family as a trained pet that usually roamed outside without any incident. The owner discovered the dog after hearing gunshots around 6 p.m., according to an interview the family provided to CBS 17.
The incident has triggered the department's Internal Affairs Unit to commence an investigation, which is standard protocol whenever an officer discharges their weapon. The spokesperson for the Raleigh Police Department expressed regret about the outcome of the incident, particularly given the timing on Christmas Eve. The death of the Husky has cast a somber mood in the Battle Ridge community, underscored by the sight of a visibly upset woman at the scene past 7 p.m. that evening.
With the inquiry ongoing, Lt. Jason Borneo of the Raleigh Police Department told CBS 17 that disciplinary action could ensue for the officer involved, depending on the results of the internal review.
