A high-speed chase ensued in Gillespie County after a 26-year-old Richmond man was detained following a violent confrontation with law enforcement this past week. According to CBS Austin, the incident commenced early Tuesday morning when a deputy responded to a Texas Game Warden's call for assistance regarding a suspicious vehicle. Upon arrival, the deputy approached the vehicle to find firearm-related items and a hunting rifle on the rear floorboard.
The situation escalated when the deputy attempted to open the driver's door, as instructed by the game warden, and the driver seized the deputy by the arm and pulled him towards the vehicle. "The deputy struck the window to prevent being dragged inside as the driver started the vehicle and sped away," MSN reports. The ensuing pursuit stretched over 46 miles, with the suspect reaching speeds up to 110 mph and dangerously weaving through oncoming traffic.
Despite multiple attempts to safely terminate the pursuit, including deploying tire deflation devices, the chase concluded only after the suspect reached the Blanco County Law Enforcement Center's parking lot, where he was finally apprehended. Officers recovered a loaded handgun and the hunting rifle that had been previously identified in the vehicle.
The driver now faces several serious charges, ranging from Assault on a Peace Officer to Reckless Driving. The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was booked into Gillespie County Jail as the judicial process is set to commence. The charges, which also include, Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon, and Evading Arrest or Detention with a Vehicle, Interfering with Public Duties, and other offenses as per CBS Austin report.
