A high-speed chase through the streets of Roxboro has left one teenager fighting for their life and six others injured after an 18-year-old suspect driving a reportedly stolen car crashed during a pursuit with police. The Roxboro Police Department identified Jamere Jones as the driver of the stolen 1999 Buick that led to the chase and subsequent crash.
The incident, which spiraled into chaotic and dangerous speeds, originated from a theft reported around 4 p.m. yesterday. Roxboro Police told ABC11, that officers attempted to hem in the vehicle in a business parking lot, but their efforts were foiled as the Buick escaped, igniting a pursuit. During the chase, speeds were seen soaring past 60 mph in a zone designated for 20 mph.
The high-speed pursuit ended abruptly when Jones allegedly ran a red light at the busy intersection of South Main Street and Madison Boulevard, as told to CBS17. The stolen Buick collided with a passenger truck and two other vehicles, bringing the harrowing chase to a standstill. This impact left the Buick's occupants trapped inside the wreckage, necessitating emergency extraction.
Rescue efforts saw seven people requiring hospitalization, including Jones and two sixteen-year-old passengers who were with him in the stolen car. In statements obtained by WRAL, one of these teenagers was airlifted in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, which, aside from the police chase’s cacophony of sirens and flashing lights, cast a sobering shadow over the community. Five other individuals were transported to the hospital with minor injuries stemming from the collision.
Jones is now facing serious legal consequences, including charges of felony possession of a stolen vehicle and felony speed to elude arrest, according to police reports. The Roxboro Police have urged anyone with additional information to come forward and contact them at 336-322-6072 as the investigation continues and more charges are anticipated.
