The marathon fever has hit Sacramento, with roads along Capitol Mall shuts down to welcome legions of runners for this weekend's California International Marathon (CIM). According to a CBS News report, the local economy is set to receive a sizable boost, as last-minute preparations ensure that everything is in place for today's main event.
With its 41st installment, CIM continues to uphold its reputation as a gold star marathon that not only attracts local athletes but also runners from far corners of the globe. Scott Abbott, executive director of the Sacramento Running Association, proudly affirmed to CBS News, "We have runners that come from all corners of the world, Europe, Asia. It's a globally recognized event it's something that's a source of civic pride for Sacramento."
Runners picking up their bibs at the convention center are part of a larger narrative that goes beyond personal achievements at the marathon's finish line. According to a KCRA report, participants like Laura Didier are using the event to share powerful stories, such as her mission to raise awareness about fentanyl abuse after a personal loss. Didier partners with the nonprofit Song For Charlie and the CIM to spread their message, which has already reached over 100,000 children and parents.
"This is our first year being invited to partner with CIM to raise money for our mission because when we go to schools, we do not charge schools," Didier explained in a KCRA interview. As 10,000 participants prepare for the starting line, they reflect Sacramento's spirit of inclusivity and support.
The fast course of CIM is not the only draw. Ashley Wursten, a local from Rocklin who narrowly missed qualifying for the Boston Marathon last year, told CBS News Sacramento, "I was four minutes off last year, so we'll bring it on this year." It's not just the smooth asphalt, but also the crowds of cheering spectators that energize the runners. Abbott emphasized this, saying, "You literally have spectators the entire way. It keeps you driven and it's just such a fun race."
