As the holiday season wraps up, Santa Clarita residents have a green opportunity to dispose of their Christmas trees responsibly. A cooperative effort by Burrtec Waste Industries and the City of Santa Clarita ensures that repurposing festive trees is both simple and convenient. According to a recent announcement, the city has set up three drop-off stations open from December 26 to January 11, 2025.
Residents can bring their live trees to Central Park, Newhall Community Center, or Canyon Country Community Center. In addition to trees, live wreaths and garlands are also accepted. Before dropping off these items, remember to remove all decorations, including ornaments, lights, and any metal or plastic components. Notably, flocked, painted, and fireproofed trees, as well as artificial trees will be accepted but, will not be subject to the recycling process, as detailed by the City of Santa Clarita.
Curbside pickup is an option for single-family homes within the city's limits. During the recycling program dates, residents can place their holiday trees by the curb on their scheduled collection days. For those living in multi-family properties, trees can be left next to the trash bins within their complexes. Should your tree extend beyond 6 feet, the city requests you cut it in half beforehand, easing the collection process. Service speed may be dependent on staffing levels, notably for trees left outside of the designated green organics containers.
The environmental advantages of recycling Christmas trees are clear and impactful. Trees diverted from landfills find second life as soil, compost, or mulch, aiding in soil conservation and plant growth. "Recycled trees are kept out of landfills and benefit the environment by being repurposed into soil, compost or mulch," as stated by the City of Santa Clarita. For those with questions or in need of additional details, Burrtec can be contacted by phone or residents may reach out to the City of Santa Clarita via email.
