A serious injury was reported following a head-on collision on Interstate 40 near Durham, involving a wayward car and a truck. The Durham police stated that the accident occurred shortly before 1 a.m. when a white Toyota RAV4, headed in the wrong direction on Interstate 40 West, clashed with a FedEx truck.

Per the reports, the RAV4, operated by Qianyu Hang, 25, of Raleigh, was traveling east on the westbound lanes when it met the westbound FedEx 2018 Volvo 18-wheeler, steered by Tyrone Hines, 68, of Pinetops. Hines, managing to swerve to the right, narrowly reduced the impact on the left side of his truck's tractor, "which caused the impact to be on the left side of the 18-wheeler’s tractor," a statement from the investigators highlighted on the City of Durham website.

Following the crash, Hang was hospitalized with severe injuries, Hines walked away unharmed. Prior to the incident, 911 received calls about the wrong-way driver, signaling the potential danger before tragedy struck. As per the ongoing investigation no charges have been filed yet.

The aftermath of the accident forced a shutdown on Interstate 40 West for several hours, as authorities and cleanup crews worked the scene. Except for one lane, the westbound side was closed until approximately 5 a.m., to facilitate a thorough examination and clear the wreckage scattered across the tarmac, "There had been 911 calls about the wrong way driver before the collision occurred," investigators added on the City of Durham website.
