A fatal shooting unfolded at the Fenton shopping center in Cary, where 23-year-old Cory Edward McNeill lost his life, according to a CBS 17 report. The incident occurred on Friday night in a parking deck, when officers, responding to a call, arrived to find McNeill deceased in a vehicle from a gunshot wound.
The Cary Police Department revealed that the suspect, 24-year-old Malik Emaje Scott-McClarin, swiftly turned himself in. Interestingly, the suspect was employed by Sunstates Security, the security firm Fenton contracts with, as stated by a News & Observer article. However, despite the connection, the shooting was described as an isolated incident, and authorities have reassured that there is no ongoing threat to the public safety, in this case.
Further details from an ABC11 report indicate that Scott-McClarin was working for the unarmed security team at Fenton, but the nexus of the altercation that led to McNeill's death was not related to their employment. As the investigation continues, Cary police have called for those with more information to come forward.
"We are grateful for the swift action and cooperation of our officers and community members which led to a quick resolution," the Cary Police Department expressed in a public statement on CBS 17. The department remains proactive, soliciting tips from individuals who might shed light on the motive and circumstances behind the incident. Tips can be provided to the Cary Police Department or reported anonymously through Cary Crime Stoppers, as both agencies work to piece together the events that led to McNeill's untimely death.
