A man was detained by White Settlement police last week after he was found in a van with explosives, guns, and ammunition, and he appeared to be targeting a North Texas church. As per a FOX 4 report, the unnamed suspect is still hospitalized, and although charges have not been formally filed, there is a strong indication of his intended violence.
Police had received a call about a suspicious vehicle parked on Jason Lane early in the morning, and upon their arrival, they found the man inside the van, allegedly experiencing a mental health crisis; there was a handgun positioned, dangerous and inviting potential havoc, in his lap and what seemed to be an explosive device on the passenger seat. The Fort Worth Fire Department's incident report, secured by CBS News Texas, indicates that the suspect has connections to the area through family members living nearby.
Officers successfully negotiated with the man, getting him out of the van and into custody before any harm could be done. The Fort Worth Fire Department Bomb Squad was summoned, and out of eight devices found in the vehicle, three were confirmed as destructive devices. "He would be charged with possessing prohibited weapons, unlawful carrying of a weapon, and resisting arrest, search or transport," informed the White Settlement police following his release, as per CBS News Texas.
The gravity of the situation was underscored by an additional revelation; there was a rifle and an AR-Style pistol amidst the arsenal, the suspect's plans echoing in the stark, confined space of that parked van. The suspect intended to launch an attack on a local church, though it remains unclear which church was specifically targeted. Federal agencies, including the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force and the ATF, are actively participating in the ongoing investigation, signaling the potential for federal charges to compound the state ones.
