In preparation for the playoffs, the Detroit Lions signed veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to bolster their squad. The deal was first announced by the NFL Network prior to the Lions confirming Bridgewater's inclusion on the 53-man roster and linebacker DaRon Gilbert's contract information for the practice squad.
Bridgewater's return to the Lions marks an intriguing shift in his career. Just last year, after serving as the team's primary backup QB, he left the NFL behind to coach high school football at his alma mater, Miami Northwestern. His tenure there was successful, culminating in a Class 3A state championship victory, reported Pride of Detroit. Despite his effective stint on the sidelines, the allure of the NFL proved potent enough to coax Bridgewater back onto the field.
Coach Dan Campbell expressed his confidence in Bridgewater's ability to enhance the team, stating, "Just to be able to add somebody back here that's got experience," during an interview with the Detroit Free Press. Campbell continued, emphasizing Bridgewater's professionalism and potential impact in practice as motivation behind the signing.
While Bridgewater's stint last season with the Lions saw limited on-field action, his influence was felt off the field. Coach Campbell, in a statement obtained by AP News, lauded the quarterback's behind-the-scenes contributions, particularly his guidance of players like receiver Jameson Williams and rookie quarterback Hendon Hooker. Mark Brunell, the quarterbacks coach, repeated Bridgewater's mentoring roles and emphasized Bridgewater's beneficial impact on the Lions' quarterback room.
The Lions, already having clinched a playoff spot with an impressive 13-2 record, are in the midst of a battle for the NFC North title and aim for the NFC's No. 1 seed. Campbell clarifies that Bridgewater's arrival "We feel like every week, he's gotten a little bit better and this does not mean that Hooker is out," according to Detroit Free Press.
