On a chilly Christmas morning, the Tichigan Fire Department undertook a heartwarming rescue, assisting a series of deer that fell through ice on a local river. At approximately 9:07 a.m. yesterday, a concerned resident of the Town of Waterford reported the incident, stating that several deer were in peril after the ice gave way beneath them. According to FOX6, the caller initially observed seven deer crossing the river before they tumbled into the frigid waters, with three deer still struggling by the time the firefighters were alerted.
The arriving crews found that, while four of the deer had managed to escape the icy trap, there were still three battling the cold temperatures and precarious conditions. As noted by CBS58, in a dubious display of fortune, two more deer managed to free themselves and one remaining. Donning cold water rescue suits, two firefighters quickly acted, making their way across the uneasy ice to reach the stranded animal.
The solo deer, which was described as young and evidently exhausted, was eventually pulled to safety. EMS personnel attending the scene dried off the deer, which, due to its weakened state, spent about half an hour recuperating before it could muster the strength to stand. TMJ4 reported that following this short period of rest, the deer walked into the woods, presumably to rejoin its herd.
In the days following the incident, the fire department has issued a warning to residents regarding the deceptive nature of ice conditions and the risks they pose to both wildlife and humans. The Tichigan Fire Department emphasizes the importance of calling for professional help during such emergencies, not only stranded by a young deer, but for the broader safety of the community.
