Chaos struck the streets of Philadelphia's Port Richmond neighborhood yesterday as an evening commute turned abruptly unsettling with a collision between a SEPTA bus and a car. According to CBS Philadelphia, the accident occurred at the intersection of Castor Avenue and Richmond Street around 5:30 p.m., sending two individuals to the hospital with injuries that SEPTA officials declared were minor.
Witnesses and the scattered remains of the accident told a fragmented story as details began to merge slowly. The Route 25 SEPTA bus was performing its regular duties when a car suddenly hit it. "One person on the bus was injured, while a person in the colliding vehicle was also hurt," SEPTA relayed to CBS Philadelphia. Both vehicles were reported to have sustained major damage in the crash, which echoed through the quiet of the evening air.
As the news helicopters hovered above, police quickly cordoned off the intersection. Images from SkyForce10 captured an ambulance, a tow truck, and police upon the scene, as reported by NBC Philadelphia. The large presence of emergency vehicles spoke volumes about the severity of the incident, even as official reports assured that no significant injuries had been sustained.
However, 6abc revealed that the circumstances leading up to the collision might involve a crucial traffic violation. "The car driver ran a red light and turned into a Route 25 bus," authorities shared with 6abc. This piece of information might greatly influence the ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash. While the bus had passengers aboard at the time of the crash, only the bus driver and the driver of the vehicle suffered injuries, both of which were confirmed as minor.
