Milwaukee County is dealing with the repercussions of two separate incidents where squad cars were struck by drivers just minutes apart, raising alarms about road safety and caution for first responders. As reported by WeAreGreenBay, on Monday, around 9 p.m., a deputy from the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office had stepped out on I-43/894 to clear debris, when the squad vehicle was hit from behind by an impaired driver who admitted, to having consumed alcohol.
Within minutes, another deputy arrived for support but before he could exit his vehicle, it too was struck by a different motorist who claimed unawareness of the impending lane closure. Per the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office statement obtained by FOX6Now, the second squad car sustained such extensive damage, it necessitated towing. While the vehicle in the initial crash suffered minor damage, some the second was substantially marred, the aftermath of which "could have been much worse," a point emphasized by local authorities, as per WeAreGeenBay.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported in either incident, as confirmed by the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office. The Greenfield Police Department is at the helm of the investigation and deliberating whether to refer the incidents to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office for potential charges, shared WISN. After the events, the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office deployed to Facebook to share a public advisory, underscoring the importance of the mandated move-over laws intended to protect first responders at work.
