The University of Michigan's North Campus area was reopened last night after a situation involving a person threatening self-harm led officials to secure the area and send out emergency alerts. According to WXYZ, the situation unfolded just as the university concluded its final examinations when many students might have already left campus.
University authorities initially advised people to avoid the area, with the Division of Public Safety and Security sending out an alert at 9:24 p.m. concerning North Campus Research Complex Building 520. Twenty minutes later, the perimeter was expanded to include 2800 Plymouth Road, which houses the North Campus Research Complex and the University of MI Transportation Research Institute. Police and multiple other agencies worked together to ensure the safety of the individuals and the broader community.
Throughout the incident, communication from the university provided incremental updates. At 10:26 p.m., the situation was described as ongoing in the parking lot between the North Campus Research Complex and the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute on the east side of Huron Parkway. FOX 2 Detroit later reported that by 11:14 p.m., officials announced the situation involved an individual threatening self-harm.
Shortly thereafter, at 11:24 p.m., the University of Michigan officials gave the all-clear, signaling the resolution of the incident. The individual in question is reportedly OK, and while specific details have not been released, officials assured that there was no danger posed to students.
