High school students at Vandegrift High School are demonstrating the impact of community spirit as they rally to bring festive joy to children at Dell Children's Medical Center. In an effort started last year by Vandegrift High School senior Sebastien Patel, the toy drive has become a beacon of generosity. "I think the reason why I first started the toy drive is the support that we've gotten from our community, and that's the Vandegrift Band or the Vandegrift High School itself as a whole. And also, the fact that almost every single Texan or Austinian has gotten some sort of help from Dell Children's Hospital. And so I think it was a great way to give back to our community and help out those in need," Patel told FOX 7 Austin.

Last year's goal of accumulating 150 toys was not only met but doubled, highlighting the high level of engagement within the Vandegrift community. This year's endeavor garnered additional backing, "This year, we've gotten support from Home Depot as well for donation supplies and then support from, again, our local community and other parents and alumni that are just willing to help," Patel explained in a statement by MSN News. The initiative is driven by the shared understanding of the hospital's importance to Texans and the desire to give to those facing challenging times during the holiday season.

For Patel, the joy stems not just from the act of giving but from witnessing the direct impact on the young recipients. He describes the sheer delight of children choosing a toy, "It's awesome seeing the reaction and going, that one, that toy. It's amazing seeing their eyes glow and their facial expressions just shine," he recounted. Patel is set to graduate this year, but the legacy of the toy drive is poised to continue. His younger brother, Collin Patel, a freshman soon to be sophomore, is already learning the ropes to ensure the tradition of giving is preserved.

The toy drive at Vandegrift High School is ongoing until Friday, Dec. 13. Students and community members who want to contribute can bring their donations to the English Hall or the front office. For those unable to drop off donations in person, an Amazon Wish List has been set up, enabling contributions from a broader audience. Sebastien Patel's vision of community support is a testament to the spirit of Vandegrift High, culminating in an effort that extends well beyond classroom walls and into the hearts of hospitalized children.
