Wake County is once again investing in its public institutions, this time with planned renovations for West Regional Library in Cary, slated to begin early in January 2025. According to the announcement from the county, patrons of the library can anticipate an updated interior including new floors, a fresh paint job, and updated furniture, designed to enhance overall experience and functionality.
The library, a cornerstone in the community since its opening in 2006, will see its first major overhaul since welcoming over 5.7 million visitors and facilitating the checkout of more than 16 million items. Before its temporary closure on January 5, West Regional has stood as a key player in the Wake County Public Libraries system, with a staggering 300,000 visits, and patrons checking out over 650,000 items in 2024 alone. Patrons have also utilized 149,000 hours of Wi-Fi, and spent 6,100 hours using the internet on public computers this past year, the library's usage statistics speak to its integral role in local daily life.
While the renovation takes place, the library's regular users are being directed to neighboring branches. This includes Morrisville Community Library just 3.3 miles away, and several others such as Cary Regional Library and Eva Perry Regional Library within an approximate 10-mile radius. These alternate locations will surely help in maintaining uninterrupted service to the community's bibliophiles and internet seekers. For those with books on reserve, the library staff has committed to reaching out and arranging alternate pick-up arrangements.
For digitally inclined users, Wake County Public Libraries continue to offer a suite of online resources. A library card and internet connection provide access to ebooks and magazines, Storytime Anytime for the younger audience and a variety of virtual programs and services. Updates on the renovation progress and the expected reopening in fall 2025 will be posted on the county's website, with additional notices to be emailed directly to patrons who have favored West Regional Library over the past year.
"Investing in our libraries ensures that we continue to provide top-notch services to our residents," Wake County Commissioner Cheryl Stallings expressed her support for the project, highlighting the importance of the library's evolution in meeting the needs of a growing community. There is an anticipation of these enhancements delivering on the promise of an even more welcoming and serviceable public space upon the completion of renovations. Wake County is extending gratitude in advance for the community's patience and understanding throughout the library's transformation.
