Westerville residents and businesses are bracing for a 7.8% increase in utility bills come the new year. According to a recent announcement by the City of Westerville, the average utility customer in this Ohio municipality will be paying an additional $19.61 monthly for services starting January 1, 2025.
This rate hike is partly due to increasing costs in the energy market, including a spike in capacity rates and necessary transmission updates within the AEP zone, in which Westerville finds its electric grid entangled. Customers can, however, take a bit of solace in knowing that, despite the uptick, their rates are still coming in under what neighbors in surrounding communities are shelling out for similar services.
It's a unique situation for Westerville residents, given that the city owns and maintains its water and electric services, allowing for more direct control over service and technical support. This infrastructure caters to the needs of its 40,000 residents and more than 2,000 businesses, maintaining quality and cost-effectiveness competitive in central Ohio.
The City of Westerville has released the 2025 Utility Billing Rate Sheet detailing the rates and adjustments. These will be firmly in place as the calendar turns, as the average citizen navigates the complexities of an energy market in flux. The increased service cost and pass-along rates for wastewater treatment also contribute to the updated billing.
