The City of Wilmington has just announced the latest recipients of its Homeowner Repair Lottery, an initiative aimed at supporting elderly city dwellers in need of critical home improvements. According to the City of Wilmington press release dated on Monday, a drawing was held to select homeowners aged 65 and older to receive up to $10,000 for repairs. This round saw 65 lucky numbers pulled from a pool of 359 hopeful applicants.
The Wilmington lottery, which first took place last December and was followed by a second in March, has been designed to ensure equitable distribution of the city’s homeowner repair funds; applicants registered for the draw between December 9 and December 20, obtaining a unique number upon entry. Council President Trippi Congo and Council Members Zanthia Oliver, Michelle Harlee, Yolanda McCoy, and Latisha Bracy were present during the drawing, along with Mayor’s Deputy Chief of Staff John Rago and Digital and Social Media Manager Ryan Paden who selected today’s winners, the full list of which can be viewed at the end of their press release, with the event broadcasted live on WITN, Channel 22, as reported by the City of Wilmington.
It is imperative that winners of the Wilmington Homeowner Repair Program meet certain income eligibility criteria, ensuring that the resource is allocated to those in the most pressing financial need, and they must own and live in the property set to benefit from the funds. The Department of Real Estate and Housing will confirm the eligibility of the winners, with repair work potentially commencing in the next few months, as per the City of Wilmington.
The entire funding pool for the repair program amounts to approximately $1.7 million and by employing a lottery system, Wilmington aims to provide an equal shot for all registrants at obtaining financial support for home repairs, as stated by the City of Wilmington. Residents in need of more information, or those seeking assistance with the program are encouraged to dial 3-1-1 for guidance on navigating the application process ensuring every eligible resident has the chance to access the support being offered.
