The City of Wilmington has recently solidified its partnership with the Community Education Building (CEB) for the management of the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), a move that signifies a strategic shift in the city's effort to enhance food services within the community. The CEB will be replacing Whitson’s Culinary Group, the former vendor whose contract had lapsed at the end of September.
Initiating the new seven-month contract on November 18, which is slated to run through June of next year, the City aims to ameliorate the quality, healthfulness, and variety of the meals provided to children and adults under the care of its department, according to a statement released by the City of Wilmington officials. Melody Phillips, Parks, and Recreation Deputy Director, emphasized the cooperative effort with the CEB, particularly highlighting the role of Chief Operating Officer Tamarra Morris in orchestrating an agreement that promises to augment food services considerably, and yet the department anticipates this partnership will result in increased scope and improved nutrition of the meals furnished to the beneficiaries.
Under the freshly inked contract, CEB has committed to boosting the number of meals distributed through CACFP from 800 to 1,200 over the life of the contract, with a distinct focus on a diversified menu and fresh produce. Fresh fruit options will be incorporated daily, sourced directly from the CEB, in addition to healthier snack variations which include options like reduced-fat Cheeto puffs and sugar-free choices, the local coordination of services further extends to milk delivery handled by Wilmington's Hy-Point Farms that shall directly supply to the food program at the Turner Building, located on 500 Wilmington Avenue.
This collaboration aims to involve more community members and meet the growing need for healthier, locally prepared meals. The CEB's cooking facility in Wilmington helps ensure timely meal delivery while reducing logistical challenges, showing the potential for improving the community's nutrition and health.
