The National Weather Service in Cleveland has issued a winter weather advisory effective from 5 PM today until 10 PM EST Saturday for select Ohio counties, including the primary snowbelt regions, and from noon today to 10 PM EST Saturday for parts of Northwest Pennsylvania. According to NWS Cleveland, this advisory comes as a low-pressure system over northern Indiana, which is anticipated to move southeast across West Virginia, subsequently being absorbed by a stronger low along the Mid-Atlantic coast.
Light snow accumulations today may face limitations due to temperatures expected in the 34-37 degree range. As the forecast suggests, the primary concern will be bursts of snow, with accumulations more likely to occur on grassy or elevated surfaces. Later in the evening, a "pseudo cold front" is set to bring an additional burst of snow, dramatically potentially impacting visibility and road conditions.
Lake-effect snow is forecasted to favor the upslope areas of the snowbelt, with 850mb temperatures dropping significantly on Saturday. This could result in high snow ratios of around 20:1, making for light and fluffy snow. "High resolution models are pretty consistent in developing a band of snow off Lake Huron that looks to become focused across Ashtabula County on Saturday," NWS Cleveland detailed.
Regarding marine effects, the region can expect a Small Craft Advisory from 4 PM today until as late as 10 PM EST Saturday over parts of Lake Erie. This advisory will be precipitated by a shifting cold front that will stir north-northwest winds around 20 knots with occasional gusts higher, particularly in the central basin of Lake Erie. By Saturday night, conditions should improve as the winds decrease to less than 10 knots.
As the wintry weather grips parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania, residents in the advisory areas should remain prepared for travel disruptions and slick roads. With the situation actively evolving, those in affected communities may consider visiting the National Weather Service Cleveland website for the latest updates and details as the weather develops.
