The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is marking the culmination of the 2024 elk hunting season with a sense of achievement. The recently closed season, which began on October 12 and wrapped up on Friday, not only maintained but also expanded hunting opportunities for enthusiasts by opening the Central Elk Zone for the first time, alongside the Northern Elk Zone. According to the DNR's official release, the expanded hunting grounds represent a significant step in the state's elk conservation and management efforts.

This season's hunt drew from an applicant pool exceeding 25,500 hopeful hunters, eager to secure one of the limited licenses to embark on what Wisconsin now offers right at their doorstep. The DNR reports receiving 17,761 applications for the Northern Elk Zone, and 7,750 for the Central Elk Zone, showcasing the high demand and enthusiasm for elk hunting in the state. Christina Kizewski, the DNR Wildlife Biologist, told the Wisconsin DNR's newsroom, "It's exciting hunters have the opportunity to pursue elk in our home state," emphasizing the unique experiences afforded by this season's expanded reach.

The number of eight licensed hunters who emerged triumphant in the DNR's random draw secured their place in the state’s hunting chronicles with all four hunters in the nascent Central Elk Zone achieving success on the season's third day. Meanwhile, two of their counterparts in the Northern zone equally sealed their endeavors with a bull elk. Notably, a mentored youth, aged 10, accomplished the harvest of a mature bull in a Northern Wisconsin scene, as reported by the DNR.

Financially ensuring these wildlife pursuits, the DNR harnesses application revenues, earmarked specifically for the continuous support of elk management, including habitat restoration and research endeavors. With $7 out of every $10 application fee directed toward these initiatives, the DNR reinforces the foundation of a sustainable elk population. With the close of this season, eyes now turn to the next, with applications for the 2025 elk hunt anticipated to open come early spring, running through May 31, 2025 as detailed by DNR.
