A 12-year-old boy from Mid-Michigan arrested after he was caught taking a nearly 90-mile joyride in his parents' SUV, with a shotgun and marijuana also found in the vehicle. The incident occurred last Sunday morning, when Clare County Central Dispatch received a notification from the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office to look out for a red Chevy Blazer, driven by a juvenile, as reported by WWJ Newsradio 950. The SUV was originally taken from the Traverse City area.

Clare County Sheriff's deputies were able to swiftly locate the stolen vehicle traveling south on U.S. 127 near the U.S. 10 interchange. They conducted a traffic stop around 4:15 a.m. and apprehended the young driver without incident. During their investigation, deputies discovered a 12-gauge pump shotgun, several shotgun shells, and a small amount of marijuana inside the Blazer, according to information provided by ABC12.

The child was subsequently taken to the Clare County Sheriff's Office. His parents were contacted and eventually arrived to pick up their son. Clare County Sheriff's Lt. Aaron Miller described the events as "disheartening that a person so young would be engaged in this activity," in a statement obtained by the Detroit Free Press. Miller also mentioned that the gun had not been used for any purpose during the joyride. The boy’s motivation for taking the vehicle was attributed, vaguely, to unhappiness at home.

Authorities are seeking to possibly charge the minor with the use of a motor vehicle without authority but without intent to steal, operating a motor vehicle without a license, carrying a concealed weapon, and being a minor in possession of marijuana. The Clare County Prosecutor's Office is to decide whether any criminal charges will be filed, and reports about the incident will be forwarded appropriately.
