A series of vehicle crashes on US-31 near Muskegon, Michigan, led to the closure of the freeway for several hours yesterday, with at least one person injured in an incident that involved 13 vehicles. The freeway was closed briefly following the main crash that occurred just south of the interchange with M-120 in Muskegon Township, as reported by FOX 17.
Muskegon Township Police Chief Tim Thielbar highlighted the challenge authorities faced in managing the emergency response and preventing further incidents amid the severe weather conditions, stating they were "focused on trying to slow other vehicles on the freeway down to prevent more crashes on US-31," in a statement obtained by FOX 17. Visibility along US-31 was significantly reduced, with poor conditions including intermittent whiteout occurrences and snow-covered roadways, which compounded the difficulty in discerning lane separations, and added another layer of complexity to the driving conditions, according to a WOODTV report.
Despite the multiple crashes and ensuing road closure, the southbound lanes of US-31 were reopened by 12:30 p.m., as shared by the Michigan Department of Transportation. In response to the crashes and ongoing hazardous weather conditions, the Muskegon Township Firefighters Union advised motorists to avoid the area or, if possible, remain home. This precautionary measure was echoed by Michigan State Police, who reminded drivers "to take it slow and keep their headlights on," as per a WOODTV report.
