Over a thousand individuals greeted the New Year with a cold splash at Jacksonville Beach, marking a three-decade-old tradition known as the Polar Plunge. Despite the brisk air temperatures ranging in the 40s and 50s, participants were undeterred, taking to the waters which were a comparatively mild 61 degrees according to News4JAX.

In what has become an iconic start to the year for the residents of Jacksonville Beach, the event attracts both veterans and newcomers of this bold ritual. As one enthusiast, Tammi Wilson, explained in an interview with Action News Jax, "It's like a new start; it’s like a self-baptism, ya know? Get rid of all the old and bring in the new, and what's the best way to do it? Refreshing and cold."

What began as a small gathering in 1990 has evolved into an event that, this year, was expected to draw close to 2,000 attendees, according to the Beaches Leader. The Polar Plunge was born out of a dozen club members and their families daring to take the first dive, a tradition that has since become a beacon for the community to come together in a shared, albeit shivery, experience.

Mitch Kaufmann, the event organizer, reminisced about the humble beginnings of the plunge to the Beaches Leader. "It was founded in 1990 in the exact same spot that it is today," he said. Recalling the event's inaugural occasion, he recounted, "it’s crazy because the first year, there were like maybe 13 people there. We were giving away prizes for the oldest and the youngest and the people who traveled the farthest."

This year, fortunate with near-perfect weather conditions, the Jacksonville Beach Polar Plunge once again served as a testament to the draw of such a peculiar yet beloved local custom. Describing the allure, Kaufmann told to the Beaches Leader, "You’re only in there for a second, and the water is really not that cold. It’s probably around 60. It’s crazy that it grew into this thing. It’s just a great way to start off the year and do something that you would never do: overcome your inhibitions and start the new year out right."
