Residents of Ionia County experienced unexpected alarm yesterday when tornado sirens erroneously rang out in the afternoon, despite the absence of any weather emergency. According to FOX17 Online, the sirens, which had already undergone their routine test at noon, were accidentally set off again shortly before 4 p.m. The Ionia County Central Dispatch confirmed that the accidental activation occurred amidst the clean-up efforts following a pipe bursting in the dispatch center last Friday night.

Lance Langdon, the Ionia Central Dispatch Director, issued an apology for the incident, "We do want to apologize for the sounding of the siren when it was not needed." The burst pipe the previous night caused significant disruption, with the newly remodeled dispatch center resembling a rain-soaked scene, Langdon added, in a statement obtained by MLive. The water damage prompted an urgent response from staff to shut off the water supply and prevent damage to crucial equipment.

As per WOODTV, the clean-up involved a professional company that worked through the night to clear the wet insulation and water from the carpets. However, the complications extended into Saturday, necessitating additional clean-up work and temporary relocation of operations to a conference and training room. Langdon stressed that despite the turmoil within the center, 911 call response and other operations continued without interruption.

During the relocation of equipment on Saturday, the inadvertent siren activation added to the dispatch center’s challenges. "With all the activity, the button to set off the sirens was tripped," the central dispatch relayed in a release quoted by WOODTV. Langdon reaffirmed to the community that despite the accident, operations at the dispatch center would continue, with repairs to the facility underway. The community is being reassured that such an event is an anomaly and that measures are likely being taken to prevent a similar occurrence in the future.
