An armed standoff in North Harris County ended early this morning with one man arrested on aggravated assault charges and another detained after being struck by less-lethal rounds and bitten by a K-9. The Harris County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) was called to a family disturbance at a residence on Beaver Bend Road last night, leading to a situation that extended into the following morning.
According to the KHOU report, a confrontation escalated when a man allegedly fired at another individual's car, sparking a response from deputies. The altercation began when the suspect got into an argument with his girlfriend, and the situation intensified upon her brother's arrival to pick her up. Four individuals initially exited the home peacefully, including two elderly people, before SWAT intervention was deemed necessary.
Efforts by crisis negotiators to peacefully resolve the incident proved unsuccessful, prompting the SWAT team to deploy gas and fire less-lethal munitions to force individuals out of the house. Three surrendered without resistance, but a fourth person was less compliant, resulting in the deployment of a K-9 unit and less-lethal rounds to subdue him. This individual, treated at the scene, was later transported to a hospital and faces charges for interfering with public duties.
The Houston Chronicle added details of the suspect's apprehension, which included a visual account of the man walking out and lying on the ground, only to stand back up before officers struck him with "projectiles" and the K-9 was deployed. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez had earlier noted on social media that the suspect was armed and had barricaded himself within the residence after the shooting incident.
The primary suspect now faces charges related to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, following an arrest warrant that was obtained amidst the standoff. Officials have not released further details on the suspect's identity or the condition of the other detained individual.
