As the first day of 2025 dawned, Austinites gathered at Barton Springs Pool for an invigorating start to the New Year with the traditional Polar Bear Plunge. FOX 7 Austin reports that local officials, including Austin Mayor Kirk Watson and Travis County Precinct 3 Commissioner Ann Howard, participated in the plunge following Howard's swearing-in for her second term by U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas).

Diving into the fresh 70-degree waters, attendees of event, put on by the Save Our Springs Alliance, embraced the annual ritual that encourages a courageous leap into the unfamiliar, much like life itself. "Nobody wants to get in, but everybody wants to swim. It's like life. You've got to have a lot of courage up front, and then it's pure bliss," says Bill Bunch, executive director of Save Our Springs Alliance, in a statement to FOX 7 Austin.

The event wasn't just for the bold and the elected – runners like Maya Rodriguez, who traditionally follows a run around Lady Bird Lake with the plunge, use the opportunity to reflect and set intentions for the coming year. "For me, I always think about the past year and all the great things that happened, and I think about my friends, my family and the great weather that we have in Austin," Rodriguez told KXAN. "And then when I jump into the pool, I kind of repeat the same thoughts and I want more of that….kind of start fresh and clean in a way."

About 3,000 individuals took the plunge throughout New Year's Day, embracing the brisk but not quite polar-like conditions of Barton Springs. The event serves as an annual reminder to cherish and protect our natural resources. "It's all incumbent on us to each save water, be way more efficient in how we use our water," Bunch emphasized to FOX 7 Austin. With the plunge and the optimism of a fresh year, Austinites look forward not just to new beginnings for themselves but also to renewed commitments to the environment and community.
