The city of Baltimore is mourning the tragic death of 9-year-old E’vaa Sewell, who, according to the Baltimore Police, succumbed to a self-inflicted gunshot wound several days after the accidental shooting. The incident, which has gripped the local community with sorrow and concern, occurred in the 3500 block of Ingleside Avenue. As reported by WMAR2 News, the young girl had found a stolen gun at her grandmother's residence and accidentally discharged it, resulting in a fatal injury.
Police believe that Sewell was able to gain access to the firearm while her grandmother was out at work. "Our sweet little E'vaa was a student at Carter Elementary/Middle School," a representative from Baltimore City Schools confirmed, as reported by WMAR2 News. The loss deeply affects not only the family but also reverberates through the school community where she was known and loved.
In the wake of the tragedy, E’vaa's grandmother, Alethea Mitchell, age 51, has been arrested and is facing multiple charges related to the incident. As per Fox Baltimore, Mitchell is being charged with firearm access by a minor, possession of a stolen firearm, firearm possession with a felony conviction, and various other handgun-related offenses. It appears that Mitchell was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to previous burglary and drug convictions, further complicating the legal ramifications of this case.
