Baltimore County has seen a disturbing increase in laser-related incidents involving aircraft, with a recent event leading to an arrest. On December 19, 2024, at about 9:45 p.m., officers from the Baltimore County Police Department’s Aviation Unit were targeted by laser strikes in the vicinity of Eastern Avenue, heading towards Martin State Airport. Utilizing the aircraft's imaging systems, the pilots pinpointed the source of the dangerous distraction and coordinated with ground patrol to address the situation.
The ground response led the officers to the 800 block of Rosedale Ave., where they encountered 50-year-old Anthony R. Wolff. Wolff, identified as the individual behind the laser strikes, was arrested and charged with an offense characterized by creating a substantial risk of death or serious physical injury to the piloting officers. According to a statement from the Baltimore County website, his actions amounted to reckless engagement in dangerously conductive behavior.
The incident in Baltimore County reflects a rising trend, as the FAA has reported more laser strikes recently. The FAA warned about this increase two days before Wolff's arrest. Laser strikes are dangerous, as they can temporarily blind pilots and endanger both passengers and people on the ground, making them illegal under federal law.
