As the wildfires continue to ravage Southern California, leaving at least 27 dead and obliterating thousands of structures, aid workers are pouring into the region to assist those affected by the disaster. Among the responders is Reynaldo Vega, a Baltimore-based volunteer with the American Red Cross, who has recently made his way to Los Angeles to provide much-needed relief to the residents there, as reported by CBS News Baltimore.
A Community Disaster Program Manager, Vega has experience coping with local calamities such as flooding and structural collapses. Now, he faces the unfamiliar flames of California's wildfires. "This will be my first time supporting a wildfire. So I am very excited to get out there because I have been training and preparing myself for these types of situations, and I feel that I'm ready," Vega stated, as per CBS News Baltimore. He emphasized the pillars of his volunteering ethos: "I believe in my own personal values of being caring, compassionate, and going out there."
As WBAL-TV reported, Vega shared his mission's objective: "We want to see what we can do to help them with helping the community residents, or in some cases, help those residents directly." He also noted that his commitment might extend beyond the anticipated two-week stay, "will stay however long it takes to get communities back on their feet."
