As forecasters predict widespread precipitation on Friday, Baltimore is bracing itself for a wet end to the workweek. According to an early morning update, the National Weather Service's weather bulletin states that a high-pressure system will temporarily settle over the region today, setting the stage for a clearer day with temperatures climbing into the 40s and 50s.
However, by tonight, change is anticipated to be on the horizon. As the high pressure gives way, a low-pressure lifting from Kansas City, MO, to near the tri-state area of IL/MO/IA will usher in a new front. An overrunning setup will result in rain overspreading the area beginning late this evening, expanding east/northeast overnight, according to the forecast obtained by NWS. Residents should expect the rain to stick around as it passes through Baltimore, impelled by a warm front set to develop to the south.
The soggy situation will continue into Friday, when low pressure zips east across the Midwest, primarily bringing rain. However, temporary wind buffs might accompany the warm front as it passes over. Forecasters hint at brief, localized gusty winds, most prominently indicated in the NWS's 00z High-Resolution Rapid Refresh model. The rain is expected to taper off by Friday evening, allowing for clearer, albeit cooler, weather for the weekend.
Looking further into the weekend, strong high pressure will build over New England, promising a mainly clear first half with "seasonable temperatures," as reported by the NWS. The long-term forecast suggests the next weather system will hold off until the midweek, giving Baltimoreans a brief respite from the rain and returning to above-normal temperatures early in the week. As the high moves offshore on Monday, another front dropping south by the late evening could potentially stall, maintaining the warmer weather before the next wave of precipitation is due.
For those navigating the skies, the NWS advises that VFR conditions will hold through early this evening but expects a shift to sub-VFR as the warm front and accompanying rain approach the region. Flight delays might occur during this period due to reduced visibility and possibly lower ceilings overnight. Maritime operations may also hit a snag with a Small Craft Advisory in effect from 6 PM this evening to 2 AM EST Friday, mainly over the main channel of the Chesapeake Bay due to channeling effects producing SCA wind gusts.
As Baltimore gears up for the impending unsettled weather, residents might need to be prepared for potential disruptions to travel and outdoor plans. While a return to fair weather is on the horizon for the weekend, the next few days could prove a literal rain check for the city.
