A treasured Baby Jesus statuette has been reported stolen from the National Shrine of St. John Neumann in Philadelphia. According to 6abc, the theft occurred between January 6 and January 7, despite the shrine's tradition of openness, allowing the public to interact with the nativity scene over the Christmas season.
The shrine's director, Fr. John Kingsbury, spoke to the emotional impact of the incident, stating "It's not made of precious jewels or gold, but it is an image for us of the birth of Christ. So, emotionally, this has strong values," as 6abc reported; while the authorities continue to search for a person of interest captured in surveillance footage, there is still no definitive suspect.
PHL17 adds that the Philadelphia Police Department is actively seeking the individual responsible for the theft, and church officials have expressed they do not wish to prosecute, hoping for the simple return of the statue.
Police reinforce their commitment stating the investigation by East Detectives is active and ongoing and anyone with relevant information is encouraged to come forward.
