The Columbus Blue Jackets triumphed in a thrilling shootout against the Carolina Hurricanes, with Adam Fantilli landing the decisive fourth-round goal. As reported by NBC4i, the Blue Jackets edged out the competition 4-3, further solidifying their impressive 12-4-3 home record this season. The game was a nail-biter, as the Hurricanes led the NHL in shots per game and maintained control for the first two periods, yet couldn't respond to Dmitri Voronkov's third-period equalizer.
Kirill Marchenko made history, amassing a 19-point December to break the club record. Aimed at improving their playoff chances, the Blue Jackets, as The Hockey News observed, have propelled to a 16-16-6 record, just two points shy of a wild card berth. Their remarkable turnaround is bolstered by their home performance, tying for second in the Metro and ranking third in the Eastern Conference.
The Blue Jackets' young talent is a major contributor to their surge. "Those three veterans played key roles in downing the Hurricanes, but the Jackets needed their core group of young players to get past the finish line — including clutch shootout goals by Kent Johnson and Adam Fantilli that decided the winner," according to an interview with the Blue Jackets' coach Dean Evason, as per Columbus Dispatch.
Moreover, the Dispatch points out the team's strengthening power play. Voronkov's power-play goal in the third period pushed their recent man-advantage success to 11 goals in the past 36 opportunities, a 30.5% conversion rate. It's an area that has seen significant improvements, pulling their season success rate to 17th in the league with 21.4%.
Not to be overlooked, former Blue Jacket Jack Roslovic's performance for the Hurricanes is worth a nod. Since transitioning to Carolina, he has upped his game with a career-best pace that might see him hit 38 goals in the season.
