A Canadian gun smuggler has been handed a nearly seven-year prison term following his conviction for attempting to sneak handguns across the border. Harsimran Dhaliwal, 31, faced U.S. justice and was also ordered to pay a $30,000 fine, according to a U.S. Department of Justice release.
Details shedding light on Dhaliwal's operations reveal that the Canadian citizen had arranged for a straw purchaser, to acquire numerous handguns within the Austin area in 2022. From there, the firearms made their way into Canada, where they are illegal and at least two have been linked to subsequent crimes. The gravity of the matter compelled U.S. Attorney Jaime Esparza to remark, “The international smuggling of firearms is dangerous and harmful, and our office will vigorously prosecute persons who illegally obtain, transport, and distribute guns”, as per the U.S. Department of Justice official release.
The investigation into Dhaliwal's activities was spearheaded by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, an agency known for its role in regulating firearms within the United States. The case against the smuggler was then prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Keith Henneke, leading to the significant prison sentence and fine levied.
Gun smuggling is a critical concern for authorities given the potential for such weapons to fuel criminal activities. In Dhaliwal's case, the connection between the ill-gotten guns and crimes in Canada underscores the perilous outcome of such operations. Especially, considering the strict firearms regulations in place in Canada. The hope is that the consequences faced by Dhaliwal will serve as a deterrent to those considering similar cross-border crimes.
