Carrboro residents interested in tackling climate change at a hyper-local level now have a chance to make a difference — and get a little financial help along the way. The Town of Carrboro has announced that applications are open for its 2025 Green Neighborhoods Grant Program, under which individuals can receive up to $2,500 for projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, augmenting ecosystem resilience, or increasing climate action awareness or engagement.

This initiative is part of the broader Community Climate Action Plan (CCAP), which was embraced by the Carrboro Town Council in 2017. The plan highlights actions that residents can take to contribute to the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80% of 2010 levels by 2030, an ambitious target that the Town reaffirmed in its 2022 Carrboro Connects Comprehensive Plan. The grant program operates on the principle that, community participation is key to the success of eco-friendly objectives — a notion that has guided Carrboro's climate plans for several years.

The emphasis of the Green Neighborhoods Grant Program is not just on any single resident's action but on collective engagement, especially within communities that bear the brunt of climate change. As the official announcement on the Town of Carrboro website states, the program "seeks to benefit low-income households and residents of color by bringing neighbors together to pursue projects which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create natural areas that are more resilient to the impacts of climate change, ultimately benefiting the entire community."

Some of the keygoals of the program, as outlined, include educating and empowering neighborhoods to address climate change, building capacity for engagement, developing Town partnerships, leveraging resources, and specifically aiming to distribute resources to low-income communities and communities of color. These last two groups are often disproportionately affected by the negative impacts of environmental shifts. Applications are now being accepted, and the Town encourages all eligible residents to apply and participate in a local movement for change, and sustainability.
