On Tuesday, a potential threat was quickly contained by the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office (SJSO) at a rest area on Interstate 95, after a citizen's tip-off to law enforcement about a suspicious individual potentially carrying explosive devices. Following the diligent efforts by the SJSO and other agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), it turned out to be a false alarm. The incident was detailed on the SJSO's official Facebook page, highlighting the community's role in safety and security.
According to the SJSO's post, the situation began to unfold when a concerned citizen from another state contacted the ATF after allegedly observing suspicious-looking devices inside the subject's vehicle during a conversation. Acting on this tip, SJSO deputies managed to quickly locate the vehicle at a rest area near Mile Marker 303 on the southbound lane of I-95 and proceeded to safely detain the subject. There was an immediate response to evacuate the rest area while specialized bomb technicians investigated the situation.
The investigation at the scene involved bomb technicians and specialty equipment, leading to the discovery of a commercial-grade pyrotechnic device inside the vehicle, identified as a firework, not an illegal explosive. Cooperation from the individual in question resulted in thorough overnight interviews and an investigation that, as per the SJSO's Facebook account, found "no evidence of a crime or threat to the community." Consequently, there were no arrests made, and the situation was resolved without any harm to the public.
