Residents in and around Cleveland are bracing for various weather conditions. The National Weather Service Cleveland, OH, has issued several advisories, including a Wind Advisory and a Winter Weather Advisory for select counties. According to the National Weather Service Cleveland forecast, the Wind Advisory affects areas along Lake Erie and west of I-71 from 10 AM today through the early hours of Tuesday morning. Erie and Crawford Counties in Pennsylvania are warned of possible snowfall from 7 PM this evening until 10 AM EST Tuesday.
The approaching system is framed by a strengthening trough over the Great Lakes and an incoming cold front, sweeping southeastward across the region tonight. Forecasts predict substantial wind gusts reaching 30 to 50 mph later this afternoon through the evening. The strongest gusts are expected within the advisory areas as convective boundary layer mixing taps into the lower-level jet stream. The weather shift is anticipated to result in cold air advection after the front passage, causing a dip in temperatures to the upper teens to mid-20s by daybreak Tuesday.
Snow is also a significant concern, with forecasters predicting it will develop over Northeast Ohio and Northwest Pennsylvania tonight, mainly east of Akron, and persist as the cold front moves through. Accumulations of 2-5 inches are expected in Northwestern Pennsylvania, 1-3 inches in Northeast Ohio, and an inch or less elsewhere. Travel might be impacted, with the NWS cautioning of moderate to heavy snowfall at times, especially in Northwest PA. The forecast indicates that blowing snow could occur late this evening and early Tuesday.
Looking ahead, Tuesday is set to see an end to the lingering snow in the morning, followed by a brief spell of fair weather as a ridge passes through the area. However, a separate shortwave trough is predicted to approach by late Tuesday afternoon, potentially bringing light snow showers to the far Northeast Ohio and Northwest Pennsylvania regions. Additional accumulation on Tuesday is projected to be less than one inch.
The National Weather Service discussion extends into the midweek, noting that another low-pressure system and cold front are expected to follow, with snow chances persisting through Thursday for parts of the region. By Wednesday morning, the low pressure will have moved from Lake Superior toward Lake Ontario, ushering the colder air across northern Ohio and northwestern Pennsylvania. Despite breezy conditions and continued snow chances, particularly in Northwest PA, the region will see a respite as high pressure arrives on Thursday.
In maritime concerns, the Gale Warning issued for Lake Erie remains in effect until 6 AM EST Tuesday due to forecasted southwest gales today and tonight. The warning covers the central and eastern basin where the strongest winds might be felt, with gusts potentially reaching up to 50 knots during the Warning period.
