A Michigan woman's holiday season turned unexpectedly fortunate when she won $1 million from a Major Cashword lottery ticket, the only one she kept after buying several as gifts for her family. ClickOnDetroit reported that the 66-year-old from Clinton County bought the ticket at Ox’s Smoked Meats in Westphalia and scratched off the ticket on Christmas Day. Initially thinking she had won $1,000, she was stunned to discover through a lottery app that the prize was, in fact, $1 million. "I’m still in shock," she stated.
Choosing to receive her winnings as a lump sum payment of $634,000, she now plans to take several trips and save the remaining amount. Her father's words about an eventual big win in the family's tradition of gifting lottery tickets have proved prescient. Since its launch in February, players of the Major Cashword game have won over $51 million, and the game still promises more than $35 million in remaining prizes, including another top prize of $1 million.
Meanwhile, another community member in Lansing, Amber Rochester, has been going through a challenging ordeal visibly. After entrusting her 2011 Chevy Equinox to Rick’s Portable Welding for a minor repair, the car sat in disrepair for months as the mechanic, Joshawa Vergason, became unresponsive. Rochester's investigation into Vergason's background revealed disturbing criminal evidence. Her appeal for help on social media spurred the community into action, leading to her car's eventual recovery, according to WLNS. "It’s like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders," Rochester expressed her relief.
Ryan Goucher, a mechanic from Charlotte Automotive, saw the story on Facebook and volunteered to repair the car free of charge. "It restored my faith in the community and my peers," Rochester said. Vergason was arraigned and charged with larceny by conversion, as confirmed by Michigan State Police and reported by WLNS.
