Apprenticeship Colorado, in collaboration with the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment (CDLE), has rolled out a significant tax credit program aimed at bolstering Registered Apprenticeship Programs (RAPs) within the state's new and emerging industries. As detailed by the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment yesterday, this initiative is set to ease the financial load off businesses looking to hire and train apprentices, particularly benefiting industries that are on the cusp of workforce development shifts.
The new policy stemming from House Bill 24-1439, Financial Incentives to Expand Apprenticeship Programs is crafted to provide a maximum of $12,600 per apprentice, per income tax year, with the total annual availability capped at $15 million through 2034, Apprenticeship Colorado is putting forth essential infrastructure, for the cultivation of a skilled labor force, that aligns with the contemporary economic trajectory of Colorado. Eligibility for this refundable tax credit relies on certain criteria, employers must be established as qualified taxpayers in Colorado, and each apprentice must be active in an RAP for a minimum of six months in a "New and Emerging" occupation.
Denise Miller, State Director of Apprenticeship Colorado, underscored the significance of this venture, stating, "Colorado is committed to accelerating apprenticeship program growth, and continuing to innovate in industries that have been traditionally underrepresented. This tax credit will help employers develop skilled workforces and provide career opportunities for Coloradans," as obtained by the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment. This sentiment echoes the state's forward-thinking approach to labor market interventions, which aim not only at enhancing skills but also at securing sustainable career paths for its workforce.
For employers interested in tapping into this financial support, the application process begins on the Apprenticeship Colorado website. Additionally, a webinar scheduled for Wednesday, February 26, offers a comprehensive walk-through of the Reservation Application for the Tax Credit. Support resources such as a detailed FAQ document, and the possibility to direct inquiries to an email helpline, [email protected], further streamline the process for businesses ready to invest in the apprenticeship model.
