A deliberate act of vandalism in Chester County, Pennsylvania, has forcibly disrupted the daily operations of thousands, severing the lifeline of the internet provided by Comcast to homes and businesses alike. The incident occurred overnight on Thursday, with a suspect reportedly having cut Comcast's fiber optic lines, as confirmed by the West Brandywine Police Department. This act of criminal mischief saw the digital connectivity of various towns such as Coatesville, Upper Uwchlan, Honey Brook, Glenmoore, and Downingtown abruptly cease, plunging residents and enterprises into a temporary void of internet access, as reported by CBS News Philadelphia.
Service was rendered inoperative for many, including those relying on the web for telecommuting or running their businesses. According to the CBS News Philadelphia, service was predominantly restored on the same day, but some customers continued to experience outages into Friday. Comcast, ensuring a swift resolution, announced that service was “completely restored” by Friday morning.
Meanwhile, the West Brandywine Police Department has publicly called for help, reaching out through social media to request any information that could lead to the apprehension of those responsible for this deliberate outage. This outreach was made visible via a Facebook post, inviting the community to come forward with any pertinent information on the incident.
While Comcast has expressed that customers can request credits for the time without service, this ordeal has underscored the vulnerability of our ever-connected society. Jennifer Hollywood of J Hollywood Designs captured the general frustration, saying, "I just don't understand what the purpose is behind it beyond just trying to inconvenience people, which is frustrating," in a sentiment shared with 6abc.com. The investigation remains ongoing, with police and Comcast officials teaming up to particularly identify and apprehend the individual or group behind the sabotage.
