A high-speed chase through the streets of Sonoma County ended with the arrest of a wanted fugitive and the discovery of a stolen handgun. Early yesterday, a deputy sheriff encountered a black Ford Focus speeding along Highway 12 and Boyes Blvd area and proceeded to engage in a pursuit that would soon escalate, according to the Sonoma Sheriff's Office.
After attempting to pull the vehicle over near the intersection of Hwy 12 and Verano Ave, the driver, identified later as Kevin Marquis Onyejekwe, led officers on a chase. Running red lights and achieving perilous speeds, the 26-year-old resident of Concord, CA crashed into a traffic signal pole before furthering his flight on foot towards downtown Sonoma, CA. Running approximately 150 yards, Onyejekwe was tackled and after resisting arrest for over two minutes, additional deputies arrived to assist in the apprehension.
Onyejekwe, now in custody, was found to have a history with the law, harboring three outstanding warrants from two different bay area municipalities, including a no-bail felony warrant from San Jose, CA. A subsequent search of his vehicle revealed more than just traffic violations; deputies discovered a Sig Sauer handgun, reported stolen from a car burglary in Antioch, CA, along with ammunition for various calibers, psilocybin mushrooms, suspected cocaine, and items related to narcotics sales.
He was booked into the Sonoma County Jail with a litany of charges, most notably involving illegal possession of a firearm and narcotics for sale. According to the sheriff's social media post, Onyejekwe is being held on a total bail of $30,000 and faces additional holds on the preexisting warrants for an assuredly complicated legal journey ahead.
