As bone-chilling weather grips the city, Dallas's Office of Homeless Solutions (OHS) isn't turning a cold shoulder to those in need. Instead, the city has opened its Temporary Inclement Weather Shelter (TIWS) this week, offering a respite from the dangerously low temperatures to individuals experiencing homelessness. These emergency shelters, which popped up on Sunday, will remain operational each night until temperatures respectfully climb above freezing.
Fair Park Grand Place at 3701 Grand Ave., the primary location for TIWS, welcomes guests from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Austin Street II, at 2929 Hickory St., has opened its doors as the secondary TIWS site began yesterday with intake from 2:30 p.m. until 10 p.m., as reported by the City of Dallas. In charge of these shelters, exterminating discomfort with warmth is the Austin Street Center, operating as the City’s external partner to provide enhanced services during TIWS activations.
Homeless people are urged to use these shelters and other overnight provider locations listed on the city's website. Meanwhile, recreational centers across Dallas distribute cold-weather packs to those who brave the cold. The OHS can also be contacted at [email protected] to request cold-weather packs in bulk.
