With the NFL playoffs looming, the Detroit Lions have received a welcome dose of optimism as head coach Dan Campbell confirmed that running back David Montgomery is expected to return for the divisional round; this pairs him once more with dynamic back Jahmyr Gibbs, forming the Lions’ potent "Sonic and Knuckles" backfield duo. As reported by CBS News Detroit, Campbell said, "I do," when asked about Montgomery's playoff availability.
While Montgomery has been out with a knee injury since December 15, 2024, his decision to forego surgery in favor of therapy appears to be paying off, with a comeback in sight for Detroit's crucial post-season game, according to the Detroit Free Press. Montgomery, who has amassed 775 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns in 14 games this season, signed a two-year contract extension that will keep him with the Lions through 2027; his partner in the backfield, Jahmyr Gibbs, filled in admirably with 365 rushing yards, 132 receiving yards and six total touchdowns down the home stretch, maximizing his output with 1,929 total scrimmage yards and 20 touchdowns for his second season.
Beyond the backfield, the Lions also relayed positive updates on cornerback Terrion Arnold and right guard Kevin Zeitler's injuries, uplifting the team's prospects further; however, the news was not as cheerful for defensive lineman Pat O’Connor, who’s expected to miss some time due to a calf injury. "We got better news on Zeitler and Arnold," Campbell said in a statement obtained by MLive, "I can’t guarantee that they’re playing. But it’s much better than it appeared to be when the injuries happened. It’s positive news."
Additionally, rookie cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. is showing favorable progress from a hamstring injury that placed him on injured reserve last November, with Campbell noting, "He's trending the right way too," as per a report by the Detroit Free Press. The Lions look to utilize the extra time afforded by their bye week to rejuvenate, with Campbell stating that the team will have a few days off before resuming practice in preparation for their playoff contenders, who will be determined after this weekend's wild card round.
