A 34-year-old Dearborn Heights man faces serious charges after prosecutors say he stabbed a caseworker several times in Orion Township. Gul Nabi Rahmati has been charged with assault with intent to murder and assault with a dangerous weapon for the attack on Zubair Mansuori, Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald announced. According to CBS News Detroit, the incident occurred earlier this week when Rahmati went to the caseworker's home, where the violence ensued.
Zubair Mansuori, an Afghan national and caseworker working for the nonprofit Samaritas is now stable after suffering 20 cuts and stabs, with Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard remarking to The Detroit News about the severity of the attack, and Bouchard also suggested that the stabbing could have religious motivations as the involved parties are from different sects in Afghanistan, making it more than a simple altercation, Rahmati fled the scene after the stabbing and later surrendered to Dearborn Heights police.
Both Rahmati and Mansuori are legally residing Afghan nationals in the United States, and it's reported that Rahmati was a client of Mansuori's. After the assault, Rahmati reportedly attempted to attack another individual who intervened to assist Mansuori, according to FOX 2 Detroit. Samaritas, the organization employing Mansuori, expressed their distress over the incident, stating, "We are deeply saddened by yesterday's incident involving one of our dedicated caseworkers."
The investigation into the stabbing has hit a barrier as Rahmati has reportedly gained legal representation and is not cooperating with authorities, FOX 2 Detroit reports, while Prosecutor McDonald has described it as "a heinous and seemingly unprovoked attack," making it clear that she is resolute in her commitment to bringing Rahmati to justice the legal complexities of the case are unwinding with the suspect now behind bars, he faces life imprisonment if convicted of the assault charges.
